Ants in your garden?
Ants do not damage plants directly, but sometimes steal freshly sown seed from garden beds
and seed boxes. Ants also feed on the sticky ‘honeydew’ substance produced by sap sucking insects such
as aphids and scale, and encourage these insects by protecting them from predators. Ants can also be a
sign that your soil has dried and become water repellent and needs to be treated with a wetting agent.
What are the symptoms?
Ants are generally seen on the stems and undersides of leaves as this is where scale and aphids can be
found. They can also be seen at the base of the plant or on the surface of the soil.
