Medium_832017115558 Can you tell me what this weed is and the best way to control it.

When I pull it up by hand, the seeds fly everywhere! This specimen was about 12cm high. It also has a small white flower. I'm in Canberra.

Answer: Hi Tracy,

Thank you for contacting Yates.

The weed that you have there is called Flick Weed. As you have described even just the slightest touch causes the plant to spit seeds everywhere. It is pesky to control in lawns and garden beds and is best done using a non-selective herbicide such as Yates Zero Rapid 1 hour Gel.

As the plants have already gone to seed it is tricky to control these. You will need to be careful and cover the entire top with a plastic bag and break off the seed head carefully. After you have removed the seed heads, treat with the Zero Rapid Gel to kill the entire weed. Just be sure not to get the product on the grass as well because it will kill anything that it touches.

Over time you will notice these come back up again, just get them with the Zero Rapid Gel before they flower and set seed to reduce the cycle.

Kind regards,

Yates Horticulturalist
