Is this friend or foe? We also currently have 3 swallow tail butterfly caterpillars munching on our kaffir lime which is fine as we watch them undergo metamorphosis and don't want to bump off any good guys!!

Answer: Hi Andrew,

Thank you for contacting Yates.

These are family members or the Dainty Swallow tail or Papiliondiae family. They can cause some damage to the trees in large numbers but not so much that they need to be controlled.

The lovely butterflies that they become later on in life are worth the slight damage that they cause. As they are having a bit of a feed on the tree we do recommend ensuring that the tree is well feed with Thrive Citrus Liquid Plant Food. This can supplement the nutrient lost while the caterpillars are feeding.

Kind regards
