when to prune gardenias

I live in Hills District of Sydney. The plants are tall and leggy also with yellowing leaves. Would appreciate your advice.

Answer: Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for contacting us regarding gardenia. It is one of my favorite summer flowering shrub, the blossom should reach the end of its season and you will be able to prune after all flowers finish. The pruning can be done anytime between May till August. With yellowing leaves, I would suggest a pH test with your sample soil in a local nursery as Gardenia is acid-loving, slightly lower pH allows intake of trace elements such as Magnesium and Iron (which is the two common deficiency for Gardenia). You may apply Yates Iron chelate Liquid or Yates magnesium Chelate to correct the deficiency. However,If the pH is in the right range and yellowing leaves are only caused by lack of nutrients, you can apply a handful of Dynamic Lifter Organic Plant Food, which is a manure based organic fertiliser, to provide all nutrients your plants need to grow and thrive.

Hope this helps and happy gardening.

Best Regards,
Yates Horticulturalist
