Answer: Hi Matthew,
Normally when this happens you have an infestation of scale. Controlling scale early helps to be able reduce its numbers . You can use pest oil to treat the scale and once it dies off it will reduce the amount of sooty mold on your lilly pillies. Give your plants some seaweed concentrate to give the roots a boost and they will start to bounce back.
