Answer: Dear Sharon,

It is difficult to know what is causing this problem with your Chinese elm tree. You say you have checked the tree for pests and there are none. When trees are stressed they do get attacked by insects. Mites can cause damage to the leaf surface but the leaves tend to curl and dry out rather than just drop. As this pest is is so small it is difficult to see with the naked eye. Natrasoap is the product to use if this pest is present.

You don’t mention what time of year this leaf drop occurs. Could it be that the tree is under some stress due to lack of water during periods of hot weather?

I think it would be a good idea if you took a sample of the leaves to your local nursery to see if they can identify the problem.
